Noel Whelan has insisted Leeds United will deploy “excellent” Helder Costa in the number 10 role next season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker has backed the one-time Portugal international to be a “star” attacker for Marcelo Bielsa’s side next season.
Leeds announced the signing of Costa, 25, on their official media channels today as he finalised a season-long loan move from Wolves that will become permanent next summer.
“If Costa signs he is a guaranteed starter,” Whelan told Football Insider. “Pablo Hernandez will continue on the right flank and there will be a battle between Jack Harrison and Jack Clarke as to who will play on the left wing.
“Costa is likely to play across different attacking positions, and he could play quite often in the number 10 role. He has the ability and would be a natural choice in that area because that’s where star men play.
“For me, Leeds are getting an excellent No10 and an excellent all-round forward. Pablo Hernandez was wasted sometimes on the right flank last season, and you could have him and Costa interchanging positions and making things happen.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Costa running at defenders and getting on the ball. He is great at manipulating the ball, has tricks, pace and an eye for a pass.”
Costa is set to be the third senior Leeds loan signing this week following the double announcement of Jack Harrison and Ben White’s arrivals on Monday.
In a blizzard of transfer activity, the Championship giants also confirmed the captures of teenager winger Liam McCarron, who has signed from Carlisle United and will link up with their Under-23s.
