‘Leeds are in big trouble’ – Expert shares verdict as Daniel Farke ‘concern’ grows
Leeds United will be at serious risk of relegation from the Premier League if they cannot find a way to add more goals to their game.
That is according to former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Leeds‘ late 1-0 defeat to Fulham will have come as a “huge” blow.
Football Insider revealed in April that Leeds had prioritised signing a striker as they did not believe their current options would be good enough for the Premier League.
Patrick Bamford was released in August, while doubts remain about Joel Piroe, leaving new arrivals Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the main threats.
However, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was slammed for his display against Fulham, and his arrival on a free has done little to ease Leeds’ concerns, as he has yet to find the net.
Leeds tipped for relegation already after Sunderland start
With fellow newly-promoted side Sunderland enjoying a fast start to the season, concerns are growing that Leeds could end up dropping down the table.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has insisted Leeds’ failure to land a regular goalscorer has added to the concerns about their survival.
“The biggest problem for Leeds is they can’t score goals,” he told Football Insider.
“As the season goes on, if they don’t find a consistent source of goals whether it be from Calvert-Lewin or one of their other forwards, Leeds are in big trouble.
“Then the problem is, you’re losing games most weeks and your morale takes a hit, and you start sliding down the table with no way of stopping it.
“I think they’ll be looking at Sunderland and the way they’ve started the season and that will be a big concern for them.
“As a newly-promoted club, you compare yourselves to those who came up with you because in all likelihood they’re the ones you’ll be competing with.
“At the moment, Leeds aren’t showing enough to convince me that they’ve got a real shot of staying up because they just can’t find the net.
“That’s a major, major issue for them and they need to find a way around it.”
Leeds have picked up four points from their first four games of the season and currently sit 16th in the table, but just one goal scored in those games has raised alarms.
Daniel Farke concerned after Leeds transfer failings
Football Insider revealed on 5 September that Farke is concerned for Leeds after failing to land any attacking signings late in the summer transfer window.
The Peacocks had targeted a new winger and potentially a striker right up until the transfer deadline, but were unable to reach agreements with any of their top targets.
Fulham’s Harry Wilson looked set to join Leeds, but the London club pulled the plug, leaving the boss concerned about his team’s depth of attacking talent.
Football Insider revealed on 14 September that Farke wants to sign a new striker in January, with plans already being put in place for the mid-season window.
However, after an underwhelming start to their return to the Premier League, concerns are growing that they may be cut adrift before too long.
