Leeds backed to agree Aaron Ramsdale deal after Rangers decision

Leeds United have been backed to land a deal to sign Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale amid speculation about interest from Rangers.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson explained that he “would love” to see the 27-year-old England international make the move to Elland Road.

Daniel Farke’s side have been looking to upgrade in goal as Illan Meslier is no longer considered to have a future at Leeds after a mistake-ridden season.

This comes after Football Insider revealed in April that Farke sees Ramsdale as a “great fit” for Leeds and is a “big fan” of his as they continue to weigh up a move.

Meanwhile, the Southampton goalkeeper is considered unlikely to follow his former manager Russell Martin to Rangers as they prepare to stick by Jack Butland.

Football Insider revealed on 16 June that Martin plans to keep Butland at Ibrox beyond the summer transfer window and is keen for him to prove his worth in pre-season.

Leeds United and Rangers make Aaron Ramsdale decisions

Robinson previously told Football Insider that Leeds should target Ramsdale as a statement signing to replace Meslier as they aim high in the transfer market.

The Southampton star has a release clause in his contract which activated when the club were relegated from the Premier League and is widely expected to leave St Mary’s.

Robinson insisted Leeds should be among the suitors for Ramsdale, after clarifying that a move to Rangers would be unlikely at this stage.

Jack Butland is contracted until 2027,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s proved what he can do with some outstanding performances in European competitions last season.

“Jack Butland is a good goalkeeper, and he’s a number one goalkeeper.

“I don’t think the priority for Rangers is replacing Jack Butland.

“Aaron Ramsdale, I’ve gone on record before, I’d love to see him go to Leeds.

“For Ramsdale, I’m not sure at this stage of his career, with the World Cup coming up and wanting to get back into the England reckoning, that a move to Rangers would be ideal.

“For Rangers, I don’t see that being a priority when they’ve got a goalkeeper of Butland’s quality.”

Manor Solomon update emerges after Tottenham return

A new goalkeeper is not the only target for Leeds this summer, as Farke aims to improve his squad following their promotion to the Premier League.

Robinson told Football Insider on 4 July that Leeds are doing everything to re-sign Manor Solomon from Tottenham after “saying goodbye” following his loan spell.

However, they are not expected to be alone in their pursuit of the Israel international, while Thomas Frank plans to assess his future in pre-season training.

This comes after former Spurs scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Burnley are interested in signing Solomon and have joined Leeds in the race for his signature.
