Leeds bombshell: Journalist shares why Jansson omitted from Monk squad

By Alex Stevens

Pontus Jansson was omitted from the Leeds squad for their Championship clash against Reading on Saturday due to a hamstring injury, according to a reliable journalist.

There was great surprise when the key defender’s name was not in the matchday selected for the key league encounter.

In response to the bombshell selection, Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent Phil Hay reported on his personal Twitter account that there “was a bit of chatter” about the Sweden international and leg problem in the build-up to the play-off clash.

Hay then subsequently confirmed that it was indeed a hamstring problem for the key defender, who had travelled with the squad to Reading on Friday and was present at the Madejski Stadium.

But Garry Monk omitted Jansson from the Leeds matchday 18 and has not named a single defender on the substitute’s bench.

It means that Liam Cooper keeps his place in the side and partners Kyle Bartley in the centre of defence for a second consecutive match.

Cooper had been controversially preferred to a fit and available Jansson for Leeds’ 2-0 win against Brighton before the international break.

Leeds will be looking for a victory to maintain their strong position in the play-off places as they push for promotion back to the Premier League following 13 years.

The Yorkshire giants have proved difficult to beat in recent weeks and their resilient defence has played an important role.

They managed to scrape a 2-0 victory at Elland Road in the previous league meeting with Reading in December.

Jaap Stam’s side are fifth placed in the league table and will leapfrog Leeds with a victory on their home turf on Saturday evening.

In other Leeds transfer news, the club have sealed an out-of-window midfielder transfer.
