It appears that Leeds fans have more than one thing to look forward to concerning the recent appointment of Paul Heckingbottom as head coach.
After Thomas Christiansen was sacked, most of his backroom staff followed him out the door, meaning that Heckingbottom was able to bring in some familiar faces.
Among them was Nathan Winder, who was the Leeds gaffers’ head of ‘sport science’ in South Yorkshire, when Heckingbottom was in charge at Barnsley.
Winder could be the key to Leeds current injury crisis, that has played a direct part in the Whites’ slide down the Championship table.
It’s fair to say that Christiansen’s tenure at the club was hampered by injuries and in Winder they have someone who will be looking at ways of keeping players from getting injured in the first place.
“Playing twice in three days is an onslaught. Recovery and sleep are massive, it’s about maintenance and rejuvenation for players.
“If a player tells you he’s stiff or sore, or has had a bad night’s sleep, you’ve got to listen. It’s a holistic approach to getting the best out of players.”
Winder has also developed an ‘app’ for smart-phones, in order for his players to be able to fill out daily so that he can keep regular updates on their wellness.
This more thorough look at the welfare of players has led to Winder being acclaimed in his field.
If Winder can have the same influence in Leeds as he did at Barnsley, Whites fans will be hoping they will be able to climb back up the table, as they fight for the play-off places.
