Leeds could now accept Junior Firpo offer – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Leeds United could be forced to sell left-back Junior Firpo this summer.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted it will be “difficult” for the club to renew the 27-year-old’s contract despite his status as a “great asset” for them in the quest for promotion.
Firpo has just 12 months left to run on his current deal at Leeds after signing for the club from Barcelona four years ago.
The left-back recovered from an early-season injury in the 2023-24 campaign to become a key part of their promotion push, but the Whites fell short in the play-off final against Southampton last month.
He is one of four Leeds stars out of contract in June 2025.
Leeds could be forced to cash in on Firpo ‘while they still can’, says Wyness
Wyness claimed Daniel Farke’s side may need to cash in on Firpo “while they still can” after failing to gain promotion.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I believe Leeds owe £180million on past transfers – that’s a big number.
“Of course, that’s spread over multiple years.
“Firpo is one of those, but he’s out of contract next year. It’s going to be difficult for Leeds to renew that contract while in the Championship.
“If they don’t, they lose him for free next year.
“Leeds are in a position where Firpo will be a great asset for them to get out of the Championship, but they may need to take some money for him while they still can.
“They’re stuck in these conundrums with several players, as I understand it.

“Angus Kinnear has a big financial juggling act on his hands. They have the power of a very good ownership group behind them, but they have to use good financial judgement while the big cloud of getting promoted hangs over them.
“It’s going to be up to the top level of directors to decide this.”
