Leeds employee makes 'very exciting' Gelhardt claim after 'huge' news pre-Newcastle

Noel Whelan has insisted Joe Gelhardt’s return to fitness is “huge” for Leeds United ahead of Saturday’s clash against Newcastle United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker and club ambassador heralded the 19-year-old’s “intelligence” and “calmness” in attacking positions.

Speaking at his press conference on Thursday (20 January), Bielsa confirmed Gelhardt is in contention to return against Newcastle after his recent injury layoff.

The teenager missed the games against Burnley and West Ham with an ankle injury suffered in training.

Whelan insisted the Elland Road faithful would be thrilled to see the starlet back among the matchday squad.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “He’s a very exciting player and I think that’s what the fans like. That freshness, that young fearlessness that he has when he comes onto the field.

“He can do something out of nothing with the ball at his feet, very direct. Very much like a Raphinha at times, the way he gets the ball and drives at the heart of the defence.

“He’s got such an intelligence of when to pass, when to play. He shows such calmness for such a young player in those situations.

“Having him back is a huge plus. We know that he’s another player that, on his day, can be a match-winning player.”

Gelhardt has played nine times for Leeds’ senior side this season, partly due to Patrick Bamford’s numerous injury problems.

He scored his first goal for the club in the 3-2 defeat to Chelsea.

The young forward has netted seven times in nine Premier League 2 games for the under-23s this term.
