Kevin Phillips has been left scratching his head after Marcelo Bielsa omitted Jean-Kevin Augustin from the Leeds United team for the two matches since his arrival.
The ex-England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, questioned the Argentine’s decision to not even name the marquee January signing in the matchday squad for the Championship clashes against Wigan Athletic and Millwall.
The 22-year-old joined Leeds on a loan-to-buy deal at the start of last week but his only involvement so far has been for the Under-23s.
Bielsa revealed at his media conference today, as quoted by Athletic correspondent Phil Hay on Twitter, that Augustin’s fitness levels are currently not of the necessary level to get in the team.
The Argentine insisted that, were the French striker fully fit and in prime condition, then he would be a £30-40m player and Leeds would not have been able to sign him.
Yet, asked whether Augustin should be in the Leeds team for their fixture against Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening, Phillips did not sit on the fence.
“I would be amazed if he was not,” Phillips told Football Insider. “What is the point in the kid coming to the football club if you are not going to play?
“To not be in the squad when it is an area that Leeds knew they had to strengthen in and take the pressure off Bamford and he is not even on the bench?
“Unless he is carrying a knock. I do not know. It has baffled me.
“Leeds created so many chances you think that had Augustin been playing they might have converted. Fully expect him to be involved in the next game.
“If I was the player, I would be scratching my head and I would be annoyed.”
United are next in action on Saturday evening, when they travel to the City Ground to face fourth-placed Nottingham Forest.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club have agreed a £2.5m deal after fee finalised.
