Leeds exploring move to sign Real Madrid star on loan as agreement ‘close’

Leeds United have set their sights on a deal to sign Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Garcia on loan ahead of the January transfer window.

Garcia, 21, has made nine appearances for Los Blancos so far this season but is keen to leave on loan to gain more regular playing time elsewhere.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Leeds have identified him as an option to strengthen up front, and are prepared to explore a deal for his signature if he is made available on loan in January.

Despite growing interest from a number of Premier League sides, Real Madrid have yet to make a decision about letting the striker leave mid-way through the season.

However, Endrick is expected to leave Real Madrid in January, further reducing the depth of their squad in what could be a blow to Leeds’ chances of landing Garcia.

Leeds could struggle to land Gonzalo Garcia deal

Football Insider revealed on 1 November that Endrick is likely to join Lyon, in a blow to both West Ham and Man United who had been interested in the Brazil star.

An agreement over that move is now “close”, and could force Real Madrid to keep hold of Garcia despite the growing interest from Leeds United.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “Obviously if the opportunity is there for Leeds United to try and sign Garcia it’s something they would have to look into for sure.

“Goals have been a problem for Leeds this season, there’s no getting away from that.

“The summer signings of Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin only have three goals between them, and they need to add more goals if they have any chance of staying up.

“Garcia, young player, has found minutes hard to come by at Real Madrid this season and there’s no surprise that he’s found it hard to get into Xabi Alonso’s team.

“When you’ve got the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Vini Jr ahead of you, it’s going to be tough.

“They’re already close to agreeing a loan move for Endrick as well so again Real Madrid wouldn’t have a lot of other striking options in their side if there’s any injuries to the like of Mbappe or Vini Jr.

“So he’s probably one to keep an eye on in January, but a lot will depend on Real Madrid’s injuries, especially with Endrick leaving already.”

Leeds set sights on agreeing striker deal in January

A key frustration amongst the Leeds fans so far this season has been their lack of attacking threat, with Calvert-Lewin failing to provide a source of goals.

As a result, Football Insider revealed on 7 September that Leeds are concerned about their attacking options, and could look to bolster their squad in January.

Farke has set his sights on one position in particular which he is desperate to upgrade, with a new striker at the top of his list of priorities for the January transfer window.

Brown warned Football Insider on 16 September that Leeds are in big trouble as a result of their lack of firepower and are at growing risk of being relegated.

Leeds have found the net just 10 times in 11 league games so far this season, and already have a goal difference on -10, raising concerns amongst the supporters.
