Leeds fans amazed by Wilfried Gnonto in new role for Italy
Leeds United fans were left stunned by Wilfried Gnonto’s performance for Italy Under-21s in their win against Norway on 10 September.
It was a comfortable 3-0 victory for the young Italian side in their Euro Under-21 qualification clash, thanks to a hattrick from Roma’s Tommaso Baldanzi.
However, Leeds fans quickly noticed that Gnonto was playing in a different role to the one he occupies at Elland Road – as a number ten behind the striker.
Usually deployed out wide on either side of the attack for Leeds, it was a new role for the forward who picked up an assist as his side cruised to victory.
Daniel Farke’s team has often struggled to find a natural option for that role, particularly after the departure of Georginio Rutter, but many now think Gnonto could fill the gap.
Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe have been provided makeshift options, while Brenden Aaronson’s return and the signing of Ao Tanaka have strengthened the position.
Despite that, with Gnonto’s new-found role, many fans are suggesting he could become the first choice through the middle.
In theory, this would allow new arrivals Largie Ramazani and Manor Solomon to start alongside Gnonto rather than competing for his place.

Gnonto has become one of Leeds’ most important players after the departures of Rutter, Crysenicio Summerville and Archie Gray in the summer.
His performances had attracted interest from clubs across Europe and in the Premier League, but after remaining at Elland Road, Leeds are hoping he can guide them to promotion.
Following his display for Italy’s Under-21s, with the clip of his assist shared to social media, fans are calling for Gnonto to occupy the new role.
Others heaped praise on the Italian for his display during the international break.
