'Signed up' - Leeds fans besiege Radrizzani with messages after revelation

By Alex Stevens

Leeds fans have besieged the club’s joint-owner Andrea Radrizzani with messages on Twitter urging him to get manager Garry Monk signed up to a new contract.

Monk made the revelation on Thursday that he has still not opened talks with club chiefs about a fresh deal even though he has transformed the fortunes of the team this season.

The 38-year-old signed a 12-month contract when he was appointed manager last June that is due to expire at the end of the season.

Asked why discussions had not started with the Elland Road hierarchy, Monk delivered an update on Thursday at his weekly media briefing.

“The club said they want to sit down and talk in June,” he said, as quoted by Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Lee Sobot on his personal Twitter account. “I have to respect that. We’ll need to sit down and agree on plans to move forward.”

Leeds are seventh in the league heading into the final two matches of the season but, irrespective of where the team  finish at the end of the season, many fans have been delighted with the progress made under Monk following years of underachievement.

Supporters reacted with shock and confusion that there has been no progress with talks, and there was a storm of protest as many took to social media to urge Radrizzani to take some action to address the impasse.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Former defender Monk has made a huge impact at Elland Road since taking over a club that had limped to consecutive finishes of between 13th and 15th in each of their previous five Championship campaigns.

Despite having a shoestring budget compared to the likes of big spenders Aston Villa and Newcastle, and making a net profit in the transfer market, the manager has kept the team in play-off contention throughout the second half of the season.

Monk’s team have accumulated 73 points from 44 matches and can still secure a top-six finish and a place in the play-offs, but are relying on their rivals Fulham, Sheffield Wednesday and Reading slipping up.
