Alex Mowatt scored his first goal of the season in Leeds’ 2-1 FA Cup win against Cambridge on Monday night – and fans took to Twitter to hail his display.

BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage was impressed by the midfielder at the Cambs Glass Stadium, and it was a feeling shared by supporters.

The Elland Road academy product has been a bit-part figure this season after losing his regular place in the team.

But he showed that he still has plenty to offer Garry Monk’s team with a vibrant display against the League Two outfit in the third-round cup tie.

The attacking midfielder, 21, was handed a central playmaking role and came to the fore after Uche Ikpeazu had given Cambridge a first-half lead.

Mowatt created the equaliser for Stuart Dallas with a superb cross from the left flank and then scored the winner with a deftly taken header to open his goal account for the season.

Supporters were blown away by the performance of Mowatt, who was handed the official man of the match award.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Mowatt had been handed just his seventh start of a what has been a difficult campaign for the club’s player of the year in the 2014/15 season.

Monk made eight changes to the team that beat Rotherham 3-0 in the Championship on Monday of last week, with Marco Silvestri, Tyler Denton, Liam Cooper, Matt Grimes, Kalvin Phillips, Stuart Dallas and Marcus Antonsson also handed recalls.

Mowatt will now hope he could force the manager into selecting him for Friday’s league clash against Derby at Elland Road as Leeds aim to maintain their promotion push.

In other Leeds news, Monk has clinched his second January transfer.
