'Football is mental sometimes', 'Brutal game' - Leeds fans react to announcement from rivals
By Richard Parks
Garry Monk has been appointed the new manager of Birmingham City – and Leeds United fans have taken to Twitter to deliver mixed verdicts.
Birmingham announced on their official website on Sunday night that Monk, 38, has agreed a three-and-a-half year contract and will be joined by five members of his backroom staff, including ex-Oxford United boss Pep Clotet.
Monk steered Leeds to seventh place in last season’s Championship – their highest finish since their Premier League days – but walked out last May after he was offered only a short-term deal by owner Andrea Radrizzani.
He was subsequently appointed by Middlesbrough but was sacked before Christmas and has now landed his third Championship job in 10 months.
A section of United supporters have been unable to forgive the former defender for what they regard as a lack of loyalty to the club who provided him with huge terrace support from one of the giants of the second tier and are keen for him to take 22nd place Birmingham down to League One.

Others on social media claim Leeds would be heading for the Premier League if Monk was still at the helm.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
No ill will towards Monk. 2016-17 was the most I’ve enjoyed a season in years. But he can search every club in the Football League for the kind of adulation that we gave him and he’ll never find it. And I suspect he already knows the truth of this. #lufc

Behave yourselves with the Monk stuff. He’s no more the answer now then he was when he left or when his side collapsed under pressure around this time last season#LUFC

Inevitable that some will be wondering what might have been had Monk stayed. #lufc

Garry Monk to Birmingham when really he should still be at Leeds with Bartley as captain and we should be in the top 2 getting ready for promotion when in reality we’re 12th, 8 points off the play offs, below Millwall & Liam Cooper is captain ..but I’m not sad it’s okay #LUFC pic.twitter.com/Zmc6k3t2S1

If Birmingham City got relegated, that would make this season tbh. Monk leaves #LUFC, is sacked by Boro before Christmas, is relegated with £40k a week Stockdale. Could you imagine

What a fall from grace

Garry Monk getting a 3 and half year deal at Birmingham isn’t worth the paper its printed on. Won’t be there this next year #lufc

3.5 year deals and he’s also taking 3 other members of staff with him? Football is mental sometimes. And they’re skint. And might soon get relegated. And might soon go bust. Are they paying them with post-dated cheques?

It does seem weird monk would take it. Brum seem to be a club in big, big trouble. But, on the other hand, when they do go belly up, his 3.5 year deal will give him s nice pay out. Brutal game.
