Leeds fans react to Pennington display in victory against Oxford
By Harry Sykes
Matthew Pennington starred for Leeds United in their 2-0 win over Oxford on Saturday – and fans took to Twitter to hail the new signing.
The centre-back, who is on a season-long loan from Everton, played the full 90 minutes of the triumph at Elland Road.
Pennington, 22, survived an early dodgy back pass and proceeded to have a very strong game, making some important tackles in the second half.
Pennington made a big impression with supporters, who praised the solidity of his partnership with Liam Cooper and suggested the two could form a solid union in the Championship opener against Bolton in eight days’ time.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Goals from Kemar Roofe and Stuart Dallas sealed a win for Leeds in their final pre-season match ahead of the match against Bolton on Sunday week.
Pennington is in line to start that fixture as Leeds will be without senior centre-back Pontus Jansson as he is suspended for the opening two matches of the campaign.
United are also in the market for a fourth player in central defence who can complement Pennington, Jansson and Cooper.
In other Leeds transfer news, a left-back has headed to Elland Road as he aims to secure a permanent transfer from top-flight club.
