Leeds fans react on Twitter to new role for attacker in surprise Monk formation

By Alex Stevens

Stuart Dallas replaced the suspended Kalvin Phillips in the Leeds team on Tuesday – and fans on Twitter were surprise that he has been handed a central role.

The Northern Ireland international has been used exclusively as a wide attacker since joining Leeds from Brentford in the summer of 2015.

But Monk has sprung a surprise by selecting a starting XI against high flying Reading in which it appears Dallas will play in central midfield alongside Ronaldo Vieira.

The front four who have started the last matches retain their places, which means that Kemar Roofe, Hadi Sacko and Souleyman Doukara will almost certainly supplement spearhead Chris Wood in Monk’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation.

Barring a major team tactical shift, that would mean Dallas will slot in alongside Vieira and be charged with protecting the defence.

Leeds fans were extremely surprised at Monk’s decision against a team who are third in the Championship and blessed with creative talents.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Leeds are sixth in the table heading into the clash at Elland Road and can climb to fourth if they can achieve a notable win against Reading and other results go their way.

That would draw them to within eight points of leaders Newcastle, who travel to Wigan on Wednesday night.

In other Leeds team news, these are the first two signings that incoming new owner Andrea Radrizzani will make in the January transfer window.
