Leeds handed trials to three players in a specially-arranged friendly on Monday – and supporters wanted to find out more about the mystery trio.

The Championship outfit’s Under-23s fielded three new outfield men in the team that lost 4-3 against Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United at Thorp Arch at lunchtime as the club’s coaches ran the rule over them at close quarters.

Intriguingly, Leeds withheld the identity of the trio, listing them as simply ‘Trialist’ in the announcement of the starting XI on their official club academy Twitter account.

Leeds’ development side were 2-1 ahead at half-time but Kalvin Phillips, who was selected after being omitted from the senior team that lost to Huddersfield on Sunday, was sent off shortly before the break to leave the young guns with 10 men for the second period.

There was no indication from the club as to the performances of the trialist trio, who wore the number two, eight and 10 shirts, which would traditionally indicate they play in the right-back, central midfield and secondary striker positions.

Supporters were intrigued as to the identity of the new men, and whether they had made any impact in front of the club’s coaches.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Leeds’ senior side are still smarting from their defeat to Huddersfield in a fiercely competitive clash at John Smiths Stadium on Sunday.

The defeat was a blow to the automatic promotion hopes of Garry Monk’s side, although they are still well placed to secure a play-off position.

Leeds are seven points clear of Norwich in seventh as they prepare to welcome Cardiff at Elland Road on Saturday.
