Leeds fans savage Kalvin Phillips incident in Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday: ‘He just can’t help himself’
Former Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips was sent off for Sheffield United in their 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.
The 30-year-old was shown a straight red card by referee Joshua Smith with his team 2-0 up in the 49th minute, as he planted his studs into Svante Ingelsson in a high follow-through from a strong challenge.
His dismissal handed struggling Wednesday a route back into the game, one which they nearly took as Charlie McNeill halved the deficit almost immediately.
Ultimately, first-half goals from Patrick Bamford and Harrison Burrows proved to be enough for United to see out the game and secure the three points, but that has done little to prevent Leeds fans from tearing into their former hero.

Leeds fans blast ‘dreadful and malicious’ Kalvin Phillips
Phillips moved to Bramall Lane on a loan deal from Manchester City, but he has struggled to make a positive impact for his new club so far.
The former England international has seen his career fade away dramatically since he left Elland Road for the Etihad Stadium back in 2022, and he suffered another low with his sending off during the Steel City Derby.
United relegated Wednesday to League One with their victory, but it could easily have ended very differently, had Phillips not made the challenge.
Leeds fans showed little sympathy to their former star after the incident, as they took to X to savage him for the tackle.
One supporter labelled it as a “dreadful and malicious challenge,” while another added “what a waste of a career” after seeing the incident unfold.
One fan questioned where it all went wrong for Phillips, as another suggested that “he just can’t help himself” after pointing out that he has been carded three times in his opening three games for the Blades.
- @AaacccccCcc: “Bamford, Rothwell, and now Phillips all sent off for Sheff Utd – Dirty Leeds muppets.”
- @davmitt: “Maybe Wilder bringing the Leeds lads in wasn’t the best move.”
- @CJ_Slater16: “No idea what’s wrong with Phillips… he’s been given a little loan to get some game time and concentrate on playing football and he’s acting like an idiot!”
Phillips’ achieves bizarre feat with latest red card
Phillips’ red card at Bramall Lane on Sunday ultimately didn’t affect the final result, but it still saw him achieve a somewhat bizarre feat that has been built throughout his career.
His latest dismissal was the seventh of his professional career so far, as he continued his record of being sent off for almost every club that he has played for.
The combative midfielder has been given his marching orders while wearing the colours of Leeds, West Ham, Ipswich and now Sheffield United, according to Sky.
The only club that he has never been sent off for during his career is Manchester City, who he has made just one competitive appearance for since the 2023-24 campaign.
Phillips almost let his team down in a crucial game on Sunday, and it was another reminder of how far he has fallen.
