Leeds fans stunned by what Illan Meslier did straight after Sunderland win

Leeds United fans were stunned by what Illan Meslier did at full-time following their Championship clash against Sunderland.

Daniel Farke’s side emerged victorious in dramatic fashion at Elland Road, having been 1-0 down at half-time after Wilson Isidor’s strike.

It was the second half which saw Pascal Struijk emerge as the hero on the night, grabbing his first goal after 78 minutes and his second on 90+5 to snatch all three points.

However, is was the post-whistle scenes which grabbed the attention of the home crowd amid wild celebrations from the Leeds players.

Footage of Meslier was quickly shared online, with the 24-year-old quick to celebrate in front of the travelling supporters, while he also directed a dig at the Sunderland bench.

This result has been highlighted as potential revenge for the goalkeeper, whose shocking mistake cost Leeds all three points at the Stadium of Light earlier this season.

The away fans ensured the goalkeeper would not forget his error, taunting him throughout the game, but it was he who had the last laugh with his ears cupped to the crowd.

Meslier has been on the receiving end of plenty of stick this season, both from rival fans and Leeds supporters, as a result of multiple inconsistent performances.

Earlier this season, Football Insider reported that the goalkeeper had been branded “the worst keeper in the league” following a 1-0 defeat to Millwall.

However, his recent upturn in form has come at the perfect time, and he has made some crucial saves to keep Farke’s automatic promotion and title hopes alive.

Against Sunderland, he pulled off four saves including some crucial moments to keep his side in the game, completed 89 per cent of his passing and won his only duel. [Sofascore]

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Leeds’ scouts have already begun working on a move to find a new goalkeeper come the summer window.

For now, though, his performances have been crucial to Leeds’ continued rise up the table, where they now sit top after 33 games – seven points away from the playoff places.

Taking to social media following the game, many fans immediately moved to pay tribute to the “massive” goalkeeper and his “brilliant” celebrations.
