Monk delivers Leeds boost as 25-year-old set to return v Wigan

By Matt Bullin

Leeds United boss Garry Monk has revealed that Liam Cooper could return to action on Sunday when his side face Wigan.

Cooper is available to return following a six-match ban for stamping on Reading defender Reece Oxford during Leeds’ 1-0 defeat on April 1.

The 25-year-old has made 18 league and cup appearances this term, though he has been used as more of a back-up option than a first choice player by Monk.

However the Scot is likely to start on Sunday given Pontus Jansson is serving a suspension of his own, having picked up his 15th domestic booking of the season last time out.

Monk also revealed that Marco Silvestri and Liam Bridcutt will both miss out on Sunday through injury.

The news was announced by Monk via the club’s official Twitter feed:

Leeds drew 3-3 with Norwich last weekend, as they came back from three goals down to secure a thrilling point.

Steven Naismith scored early and Nelson Oliveira bagged a brace to put their side 3-0 up after 45 minutes.

Leeds front man Chris Wood pulled one back in first-half injury time, before Kyle Bartley and Pablo Hernandez both netted in the second half to complete the comeback.

However the result was not enough to secure the Whites a place in the play-offs, as on Sunday they need to beat Wigan and need Sheffield Wednesday to beat Fulham, with a 14 goal swing in order to finish in the top-six.

In other Leeds news, this Swedish defender has revealed all about his “tough” contract talks with the club.
