Leeds are in the running to sign Everton midfielder Darron Gibson, according to a report.
The Telegraph claim the Championship big hitters are a possible destination for the Manchester United academy product in the January window.
It is said that Gibson is among 20 leading Premier League fringe players who are “desperate” for a move this month.
Gibson does not figure in the plans of manager Ronald Koeman after making just one appearance this season, which amounted to 24 minutes in the League Cup.
The Republic of Ireland international is also reportedly interesting Leeds’ Championship rivals Newcastle and Derby.
Gibson, who is a central midfielder, is proven in the Premier League after making 69 appearances for Everton and 60 for former club United, where he scored an impressive 10 goals supplemented by eight assists.
His contract at Everton is due to expire in the summer of 2018.
Football Insider verdict:
Gibson might not have quite cut the mustard at Everton, or former club United, but he would be a brilliant signing for Leeds. Experienced, reliable, technically sound and with a wide passing range, Gibson would immediately bring Premier League quality to a slightly one-dimensional Leeds midfield. For a player who is 29, Gibson also does not have that many miles on the clock. He has made just 180 club appearances, which have been supplemented by 26 international caps, and should be able to play well into his 30s. If there is the chance of a deal, Leeds should pull out all the stops.
In other Leeds transfer news, the club are in talks to sign a £2million Premier League striker.
