Leeds know exactly who will sign this month after Kinnear ‘statement’ – Mills

Danny Mills has suggested Angus Kinnear knows Leeds United are not going to sign anybody this month and is trying to let the fans down gently.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender delivered his verdict as Kinnear revealed the current market offers little value.

Leeds’ chief executive wrote in programme notes on Saturday (22 January), as relayed by the Yorkshire Evening Post that an eight-figure investment in January may not guarantee an improvement on the likes of Lewis Bate, Leo Hjelde and Joe Gelhardt.

It would also block the path of the trio who are only just beginning to emerge in Marcelo Bielsa’s first team.

Phil Hay of the Athletic reported today (28 January) Leeds will now wait until the summer to try and sign top target Brenden Aaronson as Red Bull Salzburg remain determined to keep hold of him.

It is claimed no fresh approaches for a centre-midfielder will be made before Monday’s cut-off.

Asked for his verdict, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Were they looking at him as a player that’s going to go straight into the first-team or are they looking for someone for the future?

“If it’s someone for the future, that doesn’t go with Angus Kinnear saying they don’t want to spend eight-figures when they’ve got young players coming through.

“But are you going to spend eight figures on potential?

“We’ve been told there is money to spend if they want to spend it. Maybe Angus Kinnear’s statement was preparing fans by telling them ‘We’re trying but it’s difficult. There’s money available and it’s not for a want of trying’.”
