Young, prolific and in demand: Leeds must join PL club’s pursuit of 23-goal striker tearing up league

COMMENT By Danny Wright

Leeds have been heavily reliant upon Chris Wood’s goals this season and Garry Monk must find another striker to share the goal scoring burden with the Kiwi.

Kyle Bartley and Souleymane Doukara have been Leeds’ second top scorers this term with six goals and Monk needs to target a player in the summer that can find the net for fun.

The Daily Record have reported that Sunderland have already began to make plans for their Championship campaign next season by pursuing Hibernian striker Jason Cummings.

It’s understood that the current Premier League club are weighing up a £2million bid for the striker – a fee that is well within the budget of Leeds.

The 21-year-old has absolutely torn apart the Scottish Championship this season for Hibs, who have returned to the top-flight as champions.

Cummings has netted 23 goals in 40 appearances for the Edinburgh club and also chipped in with seven assists.

Hibs boss Neil Lennon has been quoted by the Record as saying he has no interest in selling the striker though, as Peterborough lodged a £1million bid for him in January.

“He’s not for sale. I want to keep him,” said the former Celtic manager. “Jason is our leading goal scorer. If he can keep progressing the way he is then there is no reason why there won’t be other suitors out there.”

However a move to the English Championship could prove to be too hard to resist for Cummings though, especially for a team the size of Leeds who are crying out for a player who can help share the goals with Wood.

The Scottish striker has spent his entire career at Easter Road, scoring 71 times in 149 total appearances.

Monk needs to find a good balance to his attack because a drop of form or a serious injury to Wood could spell disaster and another years wait for a Premier League return.
