Leeds on the brink of points deduction after January no-show – PSR expert
Leeds United made no new signings in the January transfer window as they battle for promotion from the Championship for the second consecutive season.
Leeds now sit top of the Championship by five points with 12 games left to play of this campaign.
The Whites had come close to breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in the 2023-24 season – before selling Archie Gray to Tottenham to alleviate their points deduction concerns.
Southampton striker Cameron Archer had been on the radar at Elland Road, but Daniel Farke’s side eventually chose not to pursue improvements in any area in the January window.
Everton’s former chief and PSR expert Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – gave his verdict on Leeds’ lack of business.
PSR breach fears behind lack of business at Leeds, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted “PSR issues” meant Leeds felt unable to strengthen.
Clubs are allowed to lose £35million a season in the Premier League but that figure drops to £13million in the Championship, meaning second-tier sides must keep a closer watch on their spending.
Wyness insisted “anything can happen” in the Championship run-in and suggested Leeds must be on high alert.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “PSR issues were behind the lack of action at Leeds in January.
“I have sympathy. I was in this position at Aston Villa, we were in the automatic promotion places with eight games to go but we didn’t make it.

“Anything can happen in this run-in, things come from left-field and it’s a difficult period.
“Leeds have got to now trust the squad they’ve got to get them over the line.”
Leeds fans rage after Millwall loss
Leeds fans have vented their frustration at Farke following the FA Cup fourth round loss against Millwall on Saturday (8 February).
The Whites made ten changes to the starting lineup, with players like Mateo Joseph, Josuha Guilavogui, and Samuel Chambers all handed starts.
Leeds have since bounced back in the Championship with a 4-0 win over Watford on Tuesday (11 February) but Farke remains under big pressure to deliver promotion at the second time of asking.
