Leeds United’s problems have been glaringly obvious since day one of the Championship season and that is their criminal lack of depth in defence.
Thomas Christiansen and director of football Victor Orta failed to add another centre-back and another left-back to what looks like a seriously unbalanced squad in the summer despite streghtening elsewhere.
Even though Christiansen deploys a formation that uses one striker, he has four forwards to fill that role, yet only three first-team centre-backs for his backline – which makes absolutely zero sense.
Pontus Jansson, Liam Cooper and Matthew Pennington have all seen their form fluctuate this season while suspension and injuries have also been problems that have seen natural holding midfielder Conor Shaugnessy drafted into centre-back.
Luckily the January transfer window is drawing ever nearer and Leeds must join the race for a proven performer in the Championship if they want to maintain their bid for promotion.
The Daily Record has reported that Celtic are looking to make a January swoop for Reading centre-back Liam Moore and that is definitely something the Whites should get on board with.
Moore, 24, was a large part of what helped Reading reach the Championship play-off final last season and has grown leaps and bounds under the charge of Jaap Stam at the Madejski.
The former England Under-21 international is understood to be valued at £5million, which would definitely make him an affordable option, especially if Christiansen and Orta can work together to shift on one or two players who are deemed surplus to requirements.
Leeds’ promotion bid has taken a huge dent in recent weeks, but there’s no doubt that they would storm back up the table by winning the race for Moore.
In other Leeds United news, David Prutton has aimed a subtle dig at Garry Monk ahead of the Whites’ clash with Middlesbrough.
