Leeds United have reached a general agreement with Carpi to sign striker Jerry Mbakogu for £3.5million, according to a reliable journalist.
Sky Sports Italy reporter Gianluca Di Marzio claimed on his personal website on Monday that the Yorkshire giants are at advanced stages of a deal to seal a swoop for Mbakogu, 25, after sending scouts to watch him play in Italy’s Serie B.
However it is understood that the signing of the Nigerian forward is most likely to go through in the summer as Carpi do not want to lose him this month as he is a key part of their first-team.
The report says that Mbakogu himself has agreed to join Leeds as director of football Victor Orta continues to pluck talent from across Europe with the view to them playing a role at Elland Road in the future.
Mbakogu has made 20 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring eight goals and supplying two assists.
Football Insider verdict
Leeds really do not look like they are going to sign a striker this month with just a few days left until the transfer window slams shut and Orta is going to face a lot of criticism from fans if he reaches an agreement to sign Mbakogu in the summer. There’s no indication that the Nigerian would be up to the standards in the Championship and it is yet another signing that has total disregard from what is happening in the present at Elland Road. It is fine to make plans, but there has been so much future planning at Leeds in the past six months that they are really overdoing it. Football is a short-term game nowadays. Orta could be signing sub-par players for a possible relegation battle in the Premier League next season, or he could be signing players and Thomas Christiansen may not be manager. It really is a bizarre strategy.
