‘Leeds set for summer clearout as Christantus Uche interest gathers pace’

Leeds United look set for a major reshuffle of their attacking positions following the latest rumours regarding Christantus Uche.

The Whites are preparing for life back in the Premier League after winning the Championship title last season and have already made four signings this summer: Jaka Bijol, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Sebastiaan Bornauw and Lukas Nmecha.

But Leeds are by no means done there, and now, they’re being linked with Getafe forward Christantus Uche.

According to The Athletic (18 July), Leeds have already lodged an inquiry about the two-time Nigeria international, who is understood to have a €25million (£21.6m) release clause in his contract.

Leeds stepping up Christantus Uche interest

Uche is thought to be keen to join a Premier League club over interest from Serie A.

The 22-year-old would add excellent versatility to the United forward line, having played as a centre-forward, attacking midfielder and winger during his 38 games for Getafe across all competitions last season — which yielded four goals and seven assists.

Leeds have reportedly focused their attention this week on midfield duo Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach, but are ready to shift their focus to Uche once they’ve solidified the centre of the park.

Uche would likely see plenty of action as a No.10 at Elland Road, with US international Brenden Aaronson their only natural option there right now.

However, his arrival could have wide-ranging consequences for other Leeds forwards.

Uche signing could trigger multiple Leeds outgoings

The likes of Jack Harrison, Patrick Bamford and Joel Gelhardt already face uncertain futures at Elland Road.

The former appears to have ‘burned his bridges’ with the club, as reported by Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke. The latter, meanwhile, is understood to be a prime candidate to leave Leeds this summer.

Leeds have also recently fended off interest from Real Betis in Mateo Joseph. While there is little appetite at the Yorkshire club to sell the Spain youth international, bringing Uche aboard might make them more open to cashing in on the talented 21-year-old, who registered three goals and four assists in the Championship last season.

Uche’s versatility makes him an excellent solution to multiple potential problems in Daniel Farke’s attack, and many of the current squad will be keeping a close eye on developments regarding his deal.

Further back, Leeds are also still in the hunt for England international left-back Ben Chilwell, who is set to leave Chelsea this summer.
