Leeds set for 'massive boost' after what Ayling has told Hay - Whelan

Noel Whelan has insisted Leeds United are set for a “massive boost” with Luke Ayling returning to training.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker and club ambassador claimed the 30-year-old would get back up to speed “very quickly” after his layoff.

Posting to Twitter, The Athletic’s Phil Hay revealed Ayling was hoping to get back to training on Friday (20th November) after speaking to him on Thursday.

The full-back has been out of action after undergoing surgery on a knee injury last month.

He has sat out Leeds’ last eight games across all competitions.

However, Whelan has suggested Ayling could be available sooner rather than later after stepping up his recovery.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “That’d be a massive boost for us. I think getting as much of the squad back as possible would be a massive boost.

“We’ve had a real difficult start to the season when it comes to injuries. We’ve still got quite a lot of the first team and experienced professionals out at the minute. We need to get them back as quickly as possible.

“I think when he does come back, he is an athlete, he does seem to get back to full fitness very quickly. He’ll be looking to get back into the game again as well as quickly as possible.

“It’s not easy when you’re injured as a player. It’s frustrating and it can be a bit sad at times when you’re seeing everyone training and playing the games.

“That, hopefully, will bring that energy up in the midfield with Stuart Dallas coming back in.”

Ayling has made five appearances this season, two of which came as a makeshift centre-back.

Jamie Shackleton and Stuart Dallas have filled in at right-back in his absence.

In other news, Whelan has told Leeds United fans to “remember the name” of “smashing” 17-year-old.
