Leeds tipped to sign midfielder as senior duo slammed after Man United loss - pundit
Alan Hutton has suggested Leeds United could sign another midfielder to rival Kalvin Phillips after Saturday’s defeat to Manchester United.
The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Robin Koch and Pascal Struijk could not “match up” to the England star.
Phillips was deemed only fit enough for the bench for Leeds’ opening day trip to Old Trafford but failed to play a minute as Manchester United romped to a 5-1 victory.
Koch, who started in the defensive midfielder role for Leeds at Old Trafford, struggled to deal with the dynamism of United attackers Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.
Hutton stated that Phillips was a ‘big miss’ for Saturday’s derby, bemoaning the lack of depth in his position.
“Manchester United were just better all over the pitch,” he said, speaking exclusively to Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“They were on fire, and it was always going to be difficult for Leeds.
“Yes, you’d expect more from them with the way they play under Bielsa, but Kalvin Phillips is a massive part of that.
“Last season, when he didn’t play, they weren’t the same team. Whether it was Koch or Struijk in there, they just couldn’t match up.
“They’re going to need him back as soon as possible, and maybe even need to add some more competition in that position by signing a midfielder, which would be massive.
“It will be disappointing to lose 5-1 but the big picture suggests it was always going to be hard with Leeds not quite full strength and United really looking good this season.“
England hero Phillips made 29 appearances for Leeds in the Premier League last season.
