Leeds told to accept Patrick Bamford offer by expert

Leeds United should look to sell Patrick Bamford if he doesn’t ‘step up’ following the club’s poor start to the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Scotland striker Frank McAvennie believes Bamford, 30, needs to lead by example and inspire the team by scoring goals or risk being shipped out.

It’s been an underwhelming start to the Championship season for Leeds so far with two draws in their first two games.

Bamford has featured in all three of Leeds’ games so far but has fallen down the pecking order behind Mateo Joseph who has been selected as a starter in two of them.

Patrick Bamford needs to step up or leave Leeds United

Following Leeds’ failure to secure promotion last season, Premier League clubs have picked off many star players, leaving the West Yorkshire club with the smallest squad in the league.

The club are desperate for a striker to take the bull by the horns but with zero goal contributions in 112 minutes so far this season, it may not be Bamford.

“He’s a bit of an anti-climax”, McAvnnie told Football Insider.

“He was the pinnacle, the blue-eyed boy and he’s got to step up and do it again.

“That’s what strikers have to do, sometimes strikers have to carry the team. When they’re not playing well, you’ve got to get that goal.

“With that goal, you win 1-0, and all of a sudden the confidence comes in.

“You snatch an equaliser, you do these things and that’s what he needs to do. He needs to step up again.

“When you do that, the rest of the team gets confidence so he’s got to step up or ship out.

“If he doesn’t do it I think he’ll be away by January.

“We know he can do it and sometimes when you give that bit extra other players will too.”
