Leeds transfer twist: Controversial 27-year-old to be at club next season - agent

By Matt Farr

A spokesperson for Giuseppe Bellusci has insisted that that the Leeds defender has not quit the club, contrary to earlier reports.

Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Phil Hay had shared on his personal Twitter account on Friday morning that the 27-year-old defender had his contract terminated by Leeds last summer.

Hay also shared an image of the relevant FA document which lists Bellusci as having his contract terminated by the club on 4 July, 2016.

But a spokesperson for Bellusci’s agent, Silvio Pagliari, informed the Yorkshire Evening Post on Friday afternoon that the Italian defender is still under contract with the Championship club.

Bellusci is currently on loan at Serie A outfit Empoli until the end of the season, but uncertainty arose after it was revealed that the FA had listed the player as having his contract terminated by Leeds three days before his move.

However, Bellusci’s camp state that the termination was a formality of international loans, allowing him to register with the Italian FA and join Empoli.

He was permitted to make the return to his native Italy by manager Garry Monk after falling out-of-favour at Elland Road, and with an option to make the deal permanent, it appears likely that he will remain in Italy.

But the fact remains that he is contractually obliged to be at Leeds next summer as he has one year left to see out on his current deal, having signed a four-year contract back in August 2014.

He has been a regular member of the first team squad at Empoli this season, making 26 appearances for the club and scoring one goal.

At Leeds, Bellusci was involved in a series of controversial incidents, including once storming out of training after being informed by ex-manager he would be on the substitute’s bench in a league match against Hull.

In other Leeds transfer news, Garry Monk should plan a raid for this Premier League defender whose contract is set to expire this summer.
