Leeds United and Rangers new manager updates emerge as ’49ers hold European talks’

Leeds United and Rangers both look as though they will be the subject of much speculation over their managerial situation in the coming weeks.

The ‘Gers currently have Barry Ferguson in interim charge of the club until the end of the season, following the sacking of Philippe Clement back in February.

Meanwhile, there have been claims that Leeds are considering sacking manager Daniel Farke this summer, despite him having just led them to promotion to the Premier League.

There are suggestions that the club’s hierarchy are concerned about the German’s historically poor previous record in the top-flight of English football with Norwich City.

Now the chances of managerial changes being made at both clubs in the coming weeks looks to have become clearer.

Daniel Farke revelation emerges as Gretar Steinsson holds talks

According to the latest update from The Athletic, as things stand it looks as though Farke will still be in charge of Leeds come the start of next season, pending further developments.

That is despite figures within the club’s hierarchy seemingly holding talks with other managerial candidates.

Leeds’ owners, 49ers Enterprises, are currently in talks to complete a takeover at Rangers alongside Andrew Cavenah, where it appears they will be looking to install a new manager.

This update states that Gretar Steinsson, who recently moved from technical director at Elland Road to a similar role within the 49ers as a whole, has been holding talks with managerial candidates across Europe.

However, sources within Leeds have apparently stressed that those negotiations are with a view to finding a new manager for Rangers, rather than sourcing a replacement for Farke.

Leeds United have big call to make over managerial situation

Football Insider Verdict

There will be an element of risk attached to keeping Farke at Elland Road, given his previous spells in the Premier League have not gone well.

However, there does seem to be a sense that he deserves to take charge of Leeds in the top-flight, so sacking him now could lead to a backlash.

By contrast, Rangers certainly do need a new permanent manager, and after a mixed set of results, giving the role to Ferguson permanently would also be a gamble.

It therefore makes sense that the 49ers may be looking at other candidates to step in at Ibrox, should they complete their takeover of the Scottish giants.

Jose Mourinho is one manager who has been touted to take over at Rangers, and he would fit with the European profile Steinsson is apparently looking at for the club, although the Special One has also now been linked to Leeds as well [talkSPORT].

That would certainly be an entertaining appointment at the very least, so these talks will no doubt generate some considerable interest going forward.
