Leeds United are the real winners after update on Tottenham bid to sign Raphinha - pundit

Leeds United will be the real winners if Arsenal and Tottenham start a bidding war for Raphinha.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the attacker’s future.

On Tuesday (14 June) The Athletic reported Tottenham and Arsenal are both interested in signing Raphinha, 25, this summer.

On 3 June The Athletic also reported the Whites have set a £60million-plus asking price on the Brazilian’s head after avoiding relegation.

Barcelona are now said to be unable to afford a deal after the club’s economic vice president Eduard Romeu revealed the club need to find €500million (£428million) to save themselves from financial ruin (Sport, 9 June).

Kenny claims this is the best-case scenario for Leeds even though one of their key players is being linked with a move away from the club.

“Listen, you want as many clubs interested as possible,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“That will only drive the price up. For me, if Tottenham show an interest, I am sure he would want to go and play in the Champions League.

“It’s definitely good for Leeds that there are more clubs interested.

“It will only drive the price up and that gives the club the chance to strengthen even though are losing a good player.”

Raphinha scored 11 goals in 35 games for Leeds United during the 2021-22 season as the club fought against relegation.

However, his penalty on the final day v Brentford (22 May) helped his side retain their top-flight status.
