Leeds United backed to get promoted after ‘breakdown’ – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness believes the crushing 4-0 defeat against QPR could be what Leeds United needed to spur them on in their promotion bid this season.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claims it sometimes “takes a breakdown to break through” after the Whites have been in poor form recently.
Leeds have now won just one of their past five Championship matches and only have one game left to try and secure automatic promotion.
Daniel Farke’s side are hoping a victory over Southampton at Elland Road will be enough to take them back above second-placed Ipswich Town, who need just a point against all but relegated Huddersfield Town to be promoted.
Leeds United could still secure promotion
Wyness believes Leeds will have enough at their disposal to earn an immediate return to the Premier League despite their lack of form coming at just the wrong time.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Having experience of the league with Aston Villa when we thought we were going to get automatic promotion and we ended up in the playoff final, which we lost, I know how tough that league is.
“I do think that Leeds will make it. There is just something there that they are going to fight and get through.
“Hopefully, the result against QPR was a hiccup and they can now regroup.

“We saw with Everton recently they lost 6-0. They regrouped and then put in some of the best performances they have had all season.
“I’m hoping Leeds can take advantage of that 4-0 defeat, mentally get stronger and go back and finish the season off.
“Sometimes it takes a breakdown to break through.”
