Leeds United backed to win race to James McAtee after journalist’s update – pundit

Kevin Campbell has backed Leeds United to win the race to Man City midfielder James McAtee this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker is adamant the 19-year-old would get game time at Elland Road next season.

According to the Daily Mail‘s Simon Jones (27 July), City will consider letting McAtee leave on loan if clubs can give assurances that the midfielder will play.

Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Villarreal are all said to be interested in signing the teenager.

Man City and Leeds have been in contact regularly through the window, with Kalvin Phillips joining the Premier League champions and Darko Gyabi moving in the opposite direction.

When asked by Football Insider where was best for McAtee to develop, Campbell said: “He needs to be in the Premier League.

“I tell you why, this is where he wants to cut his mustard. This is where he needs to prove himself.

“It is not the same going out to Spain. If you can get in and play in the Premier League, that would be best.

“Yes, those clubs are not a Man City but you are playing against top clubs week in, week out. Pep Guardiola needs to know you can cut it.

“You learn about players character when the chips are down. Do you still do the right things when you are 3-0 down? Are you still working?

“I think he has a lot of good choices but I think Leeds would be best. He would get game time there next season.”
