‘Leeds United could let stars go immediately’ – Stefan Borson

Leeds United could be prepared to move some players on over the coming weeks to help boost their transfer budget this summer.

Daniel Farke’s side earned promotion back to the Premier League after claiming the Championship title.

Football Insider revealed on 7 May Leeds will have a £150million budget in the upcoming transfer window, with majority owner 49ers Enterprises looking to take the club to the next step.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Leeds could look to sell some players this summer to boost their profit and sustainability (PSR) position.

The Yorkshire giants were believed to be close to breaching the PSR rules for 2023-24 before selling Archie Gray to Tottenham for £30million, with top-flight clubs permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

Leeds posted a record-breaking Championship revenue last season despite seeing their turnover fall from £189.7million in 2022-23 to £127.6million.

However, the club’s losses increased from £33.7million to £60.8million across the same period.

Leeds chiefs told to green light £120m signing spree

Borson insisted Leeds will need to spend up to £120million to be in with a chance of avoiding relegation from the Premier League next season.

He told Football Insider: “They have said it themselves that they’re going to spend as much money as they are permitted to spend.

“They recognise if you don’t spend £100-120million you’ve got no chance of staying up.

“But that doesn’t mean they won’t try and sell as well.

“They may try and sell as well.

“So, buying but also selling, and I think you know the clubs that have figured out the best approach to PSR are the clubs that understand that sacrifice on one side for players with high player-trading profits while also bringing in new signings to improve the squad.

“It’s getting that balance right.

“The bottom line is, there’s that trading of players, which Leeds did obviously with Archie Gray last summer while also investing.”
