Leeds United employee backs Charlie Cresswell to join new club after talks reveal
Noel Whelan has backed Charlie Cresswell to seal a loan move to the Championship this summer if he doesn’t feature in Jesse Marsch’s plans at Leeds United.
The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Under-23 football “just isn’t enough” to help the 19-year-old further his development.
Cresswell made five Premier League appearances during the 2021-22 campaign as Leeds United narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.
He is part of Lee Carsley’s England Under-21 squad for this month’s internationals.
The centre-back has already earned three caps at that level.
As quoted by the Yorkshire Post (31 May), Cresswell has revealed he will be sitting down with Marsch and Victor Orta to decide where his immediate future lies – insisting he would “like to play more football”.
He also referenced the success of Marc Guehi, Cameron Archer, and Conor Gallagher during their respective loan moves.
Whelan claimed a loan exit could be beneficial for Leeds United in the long-term.
“He’s in the international set-up and he’s had that taste of first-team action,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.
“I do believe there comes a certain point where Under-23 football just isn’t enough.
“He’s looking for that next progression. If it’s not with Leeds United in the Premier League – it should be a loan.
“A good Championship side could help him progress and learn his game that little bit more.

“That will be even more beneficial for the club in the long term.
“He needs a standard of football which can help him develop.”
