Leeds United employee hails 'genius' Joe Gelhardt as new footage emerges

Noel Whelan has hailed Joe Gelhardt for single-handedly “breathing life back” into Leeds United with his “genius” assist against Brighton on Sunday (15 May).

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the 20-year-old’s “excellent” performance against the Seagulls.

In a perfect new angle posted by Lewis Deighton on Twitter (15 May), Gelhardt can be seen twisting between two onrushing Brighton defenders before clipping the ball into the six-yard box for Pascal Struijk to nod home.

The goal lifted Leeds United out of the relegation zone ahead of the Elland Road club’s final game against Brentford on Sunday (22 May).

Jesse Marsch’s side are one point ahead of 18th-place Burnley – who have two games left to play.

Whelan insisted the Whites have been given a “real boost” in the relegation fight thanks to Gelhardt.

“He was excellent all game,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“What a moment to bring out that bit of genius and provide the magic to set up Struijk.

“He ran himself into the ground all game – and when we needed someone to do something a bit different, he was there.

“He’s the one who breathed back the life and hope by getting that point. It gives us a real boost going into what is a massive game against Brentford.”

As per LUFCDATA (15 May), Gelhardt won six duels, made four ball recoveries and created two chances during Sunday’s draw.

The former Wigan youngster has notched two goals and four assists in 661 minutes of Premier League football this term.
