Leeds United employee issues Tyler Roberts claim after key update

Noel Whelan has suggested Tyler Roberts is “better suited to the Championship” after he left Leeds United to join Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed it was important to “slim down the squad” with Jesse Marsch’s side having already made six summer additions.

Leeds United confirmed on Wednesday (6 July) that Roberts has joined QPR on a season-long loan.

According to the Daily Mail (6 July), the Londoners have the option to make the move permanent for a fee of £4.5million.

The 19-time Wales international, who has two years remaining on his Elland Road contract, has managed just two goals in 51 career Premier League outings.

Whelan suggested Roberts can regain his confidence and goalscoring touch in the second tier.

“I think it is very important to start slimming down the squad,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“We’ve got brand new players coming in, and it’s important for him to get out and get some game time with the World Cup coming up.

“He’s proven that he’s found it difficult to nail down a place in the side, and the opportunities he has been given he probably hasn’t taken.

“I think it’s a good move for him. It’s a good Championship club to get that confidence back and score some goals – and I think that’ll be good for him.

“But realistically, when I think about Tyler Roberts at Leeds United – I think he’s probably better suited to the Championship.

“I could be wrong, but it’s important he makes a real go of it with QPR and see where it takes him.

“You can never say never in football, but I think it’s probably the right level for him.”
