Leeds United employee makes 'very important' Junior Firpo claim after source's crushing reveal

Noel Whelan has insisted it was “very important” Junior Firpo played for Leeds United against Manchester City after Stuart Dallas’ serious injury blow.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker and club ambassador insisted the 25-year-old could make the left-back role his own in his teammate’s absence.

A Leeds source told Football Insider on Friday (6 May) there are fears Dallas could miss all of next season in a “devastating” update.

Speaking at his press conference on Friday (6 May), Jesse Marsch confirmed doctors said it would be a “long recovery” for the Northern Ireland international after he suffered a femoral fracture.

Firpo made his first appearance in five games in the 4-0 defeat to City.

Whelan admitted it is vital the 2021 signing gets back up to speed as the only recognised senior left-back.

Asked how important it was Firpo got game time last week with Dallas out, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s very important. Very important.

“He’s now going to be the main player in that position. There’s not going to be a Stuart Dallas that goes back into that position or anyone else deputising.

“This is an opportunity for him to make it his own and finish the season very strong with some fantastic performances. We’re gonna need that from him.

“He’s going to need to stand up and be counted as the player that we bought. There’s no hiding now out there now.

“He needs to put in the performances. He needs to do it for his teammates, himself and Stuart Dallas to help maintain our Premier League status.”

Firpo has played 23 times since his move from Barcelona.

He has suffered several injuries during his time at Elland Road.
