Leeds United employee: Mateusz Klich backed to start marquee showdown in unexpected twist

Noel Whelan has backed Mateusz Klich to start for Leeds United in place of the suspended Tyler Adams for the clash against Man City this month.

The former Whites striker and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 32-year-old’s wealth of experience will give him the edge over younger options like Sam Greenwood.

Tyler Adams will be suspended as Leeds United return to action against Man City on 28 December following his second bookable offence against Tottenham last month.

Poland international Klich has featured heavily in the mid-season friendlies held during the World Cup and scored a stunning curler against Spanish side Elche last week (8 December).

He has featured 13 times for Leeds United this term but is yet to make a Premier League start – coming off the bench on 11 occasions in the top flight.

Meanwhile, Greenwood – who came through the ranks as a striker – has featured in a new central-midfield berth in clashes against Fulham and Barnsley this term.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think Klich can come in and play that role.

“He’s had a big part abroad in this training camp and the friendly matches and scored a good goal.

“There are options to come in and fill that position, but it’s a massive blow. We’ve seen how important Tyler Adams is for keeping the game ticking and keeping possession.

Leeds United, Sam Greenwood

“But looking back at Sam Greenwood’s performances before the break, it’s got to be a toss-up between Klick and Greenwood.

“Klich has got the experience. If you’re asking me to choose one, I’d go with him. Man City are a very wise and talented side.”
