Leeds United employee shares 'incredible' Crysensio Summerville claim after star teammate's reveal

Noel Whelan has backed “incredible” youngster Crysensio Summerville to “make the breakthrough” for Leeds United this term.

The former Whites striker and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 20-year-old will be needed by Jesse Marsch as the fixtures pile up in a unique Premier League season.

Summerville scored a goal and created three more as a strong Leeds United Under-21 side registered a 6-2 win over Southampton B on Friday (16 September).

Speaking to club media post-match, teammate Patrick Bamford claimed youth football is “too easy” for the winger and urged him to capitalise on his next chance in the first-team.

Summerville has made eight Premier League appearances during his time at Elland Road – including two this season – but is yet to start a league match.

The Netherlands Under-21 international, who has scored 14 in 30 for the Whites’ Under-21 side, played 90 minutes against Barnsley in League Cup action last month.

Whelan suggested the winger, who penned a new deal earlier this summer, will be “very difficult” to loan out.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I’ve always said it, when you get to a certain point in Under-21 football – you start looking for the next progression.

“That could be in the first-team or out on loan elsewhere as some of the other players are doing, like Charlie Cresswell.

“I think we realise what an incredible player we have on our hands because of these performances he’s putting in.

“It’s very difficult to send a player like that out on loan.

“He’s doing everything he needs to do, showing that professionalism and quality week-in, week-out.

“It’s just a question of making the breakthrough. He’s certainly someone that Leeds United will need in the course of the season with all the games in different competitions.

“His opportunity will come.”
