Leeds United employee suggests new Cody Drameh move after training ground reveal

Noel Whelan has backed Cody Drameh to excel in another loan away from Leeds United as he targets a first-team breakthrough.

The former Whites striker and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 21-year-old could follow in the footsteps of Charlie Cresswell and Jamie Shackleton by getting regular game time in the Championship.

Drameh is part of the Leeds United squad currently away in Spain on a training camp before the Premier League resumes on Boxing Day.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post (9 December), manager Jesse Marsch claimed the defender has had the “best two weeks he’s ever had” in training under his management.

However, the American warned Drameh that Rasmus Kristensen and Luke Ayling remain ahead of him in the right-back pecking order.

The England Under-21 international, who is out of contract in June 2024, spent the second half of last season on loan at Cardiff in the Championship.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think a loan could well be the best option.

“You’ve got to be fair to the player, but also to the football club.

“A loan move, like we’re seeing with Shackleton and Cresswell at Millwall, is proving to be beneficial for all parties.

“You’ve got to be honest. If he’s not going to get the game time, then it’s better to give him that away on loan.

“He needs senior matches under his belt, and then next season that could end up being beneficial.

“You never want to lose a good player, and he’s certainly a big talent. In the long-term, a loan is probably for the best.”
