Leeds United employee thrilled by what he’s seen from Wilfried Gnonto as prediction made
Noel Whelan has claimed Wilfried Gnonto is “ready” for an increased role at Leeds United after his “brilliance” in their recent friendly games.
The former Whites striker and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 19-year-old is like a “firework”.
Gnonto joined from FC Zurich during the summer transfer window and made his first Leeds United start just before the World Cup in the 4-3 loss against Tottenham (12 November).
He has impressed fans and pundits alike in mid-season friendly games against Elche, Real Sociedad, and Monaco as the Whites prepare to face Man City in the Premier League on 28 December.
The forward, who has already collected eight Italy caps, has competition for places from the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Jack Harrison, and Luis Sinisterra.
As quoted by Leeds Live (20 December), assistant boss Rene Muric backed Gnonto to become a “very, very good player in the future” and claimed it is “very nice to have such a great human being in your squad”.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think he’s ready.
“Everyone has seen that. He’s had time to settle into the football club, into the environment, new teammates – and now he looks ready, and very hungry.

“There have been some real moments of brilliance in these friendlies. He’s like a firework when he gets on the ball because he’s just got so much energy.
“He is definitely a very exciting player and someone who can make a difference in this second half of the season.”
