Noel Whelan admits he is concerned about Jean-Kevin Augustin amid major doubts he will play for Leeds United again this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, Whelan reacted to the latest devastating update on the 23-year-old’s fitness.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Marcelo Bielsa revealed that Augustin would be absent from Sunday’s clash with Cardiff City with an old injury he has been unable to shake off.

Leeds Live’s Beren Cross has reported the striker is still struggling to recover from the original hamstring issue which kept him out pre-lockdown.

Whelan admits that a niggling injury is more of a worry than a new problem, suggesting it could be something chronic which could plague his entire career.

Asked if the latest update was more of a concern than a fresh injury, Whelan told Football Insider: “It is because it means it’s not healing properly, his body’s not healing the way it should do. I’ve had problems with hamstrings myself and it depends what sort of cut or tear you get.

“Mine tore like a cat’s eye, through the middle. If you get a straight cut sometimes that’s easier to heal. When it splits through the middle like an eye shape, sometimes that takes longer and you’ve got a weakness in the middle of that hamstring muscle.

“You’ve got to have people that are fully fit, you can’t have people who are getting injuries in the same place.”

Augustin has played just 48 minutes in three appearances since joining Leeds on loan from RB Leipzig in January.

He spent the first half of the season with AS Monaco where he scored just once in 13 matches.

In other Leeds United news, Whelan has hailed the Whites as he rips into Aston Villa for “cheating”.
