‘Leeds United face PSR issue due to promotion bonuses’ – Stefan Borson

Leeds United could face profit and sustainability (PSR) issues after securing promotion back to the Premier League.

The Yorkshire giants were believed to be close to breaching the PSR rules for 2023-24 before selling Archie Gray to Tottenham for £30million.

Under the Premier League’s PSR rules, top-flight clubs are allowed to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

However, the cap drops from £35million a season in the Premier League to £13million in the Championship, where Leeds have spent the past two seasons since their relegation in 2023.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Leeds are set to pay £20million in promotion bonuses after securing their return to the top flight.

Daniel Farke’s side are currently level on points with second-place Burnley, but they have a far superior goal difference over the Lancashire club.

Leeds are set to make the trip to Plymouth Argyle on the final day, while Burnley will host Millwall as the two sides battle it out for the Championship title.

Leeds hit by £61m blow after stunning twist

Borson insisted Leeds will have a PSR issue after spending two seasons in the Championship.

He told Football Insider: “They haven’t got a lot of leeway from PSR for 2024-25.

“I’m just doing an analysis actually and the problem that Leeds have got is they’re going to be tested for Premier League PSR in January 2026, and the maximum loss is going to be £61million because they’re going to have two seasons in the Championship.

“They are going to have £35million plus two £13millions, so the cap is £61million. That’s not big.

“Remember, everybody else is going to have £105million, so that’s an issue for them.

“By the way, they disclosed in their accounts that the promotion bonus is £20million, so we know straight away their internal penalty is £20million.

“They do want to reward the players who get promotion, but it is going to impact them from a PSR perspective, so they won’t have a lot of leeway there.”

Daniel Farke sack update emerges at Leeds

Football Insider revealed on 26 April Leeds are set to throw their weight behind Farke following speculation around his future.

It is believed Elland Road chiefs have concerns about the German manager’s record in the Premier League, having previously been relegated with Norwich City.

However, sources say the club’s hierarchy are ready to provide Farke with “huge” funds this summer after securing their return to the top flight.
