Leeds United in Callum Wilson battle after Newcastle decision

Leeds United are bracing for Premier League competition as they weigh up a contract offer for Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson, sources have told Football Insider.

The 33-year-old is currently out of contract at St James’ Park next month.

Leeds are considering a free transfer swoop for Wilson but have reservations over his age and fitness issues in recent seasons.

The Athletic have reported on Monday (26 May) that Newcastle have decided against activating his 12-month contract option – but are ready to negotiate a more incentive-based deal.

Leeds could swoop in and make a lucrative offer as they look to bolster their attack, but are expecting other Premier League clubs to make similar approaches.

Wilson was emotional and did a solo lap of honour at St James’ Park after their final day loss against Everton (25 May) – a potential hint that his future lies elsewhere.

He made 22 appearances across all competitions in the 2024-25 campaign, starting in just three of those outings and scoring one goal.

Wilson joined Newcastle from Bournemouth in 2020 and has hit 49 goals in 130 games for the Magpies.

Leeds are preparing for their return to the Premier League and are placing an emphasis on top-flight experience as they plan their transfer business.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (6 May) that the Whites will not build their attack around Championship top scorer Joel Piroe next season.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Friday (23 May) that Aston Villa, West Ham and Leeds are eyeing moves for Southampton midfielder Matheus Fernandes.

The Saints face a losing fight to keep hold of Fernandes following relegation, with the club valuing him around £25million.

He joined from Sporting CP last summer (2024) and is under contract until June 2029.
