Leeds United lawsuit against Everton likely to collapse – Wyness

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness believes the Leeds United lawsuit against Everton will collapse as the case is not strong enough.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – said he is worried that the lawsuit will set a bad precedent.

The Yorkshire club, alongside Burnley and Leicester City, informed Everton that they intend to sue for £300million (£100m each) if the Merseyside club was found guilty of breaching financial rules.

The Toffees were found guilty and deducted 10 points after their first hearing – reduced to six after a successful appeal last week.

Wyness believes the trio of clubs will find it hard to argue that Everton breaching financial rules impacted their relegation.

“I’d really ask those three clubs to reconsider because they’ve got to show a direct causation to the damages that Everton have caused them,” Wyness told Football Insider.

Can Leeds argue that not having a great back four or a performance from their midfield or missing a couple of chances was not the reason that they lost points in certain games?

So it’s very hard to directly show the cause and damage that Everton have done to them.

So I think those cases are pretty flimsy and it would also encourage a precedent that is wrong for the game to keep on going down this legal route.

We’re now worried about getting too much legal interference and worried about who’s got the best KC rather than who your centre-forward is.
