Leeds United news: Jesse Marsch told to defy Victor Orta after transfer reveal – Mills

Leeds United will need more than 18 first-team players in their squad if they want to be a success next season, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender claimed the club’s struggle this season show that more strength in depth is needed next term.

Victor Orta told TGG’s Scouting and Recruitment Webinar last month (26 March), via the Yorkshire Evening Post, that he wants 18 professional four Under-23s players in the squad next season.

Leeds’ director of football also claimed the club plan to buy “one or two” players in the summer window but do not want an over-inflated squad.

Asked for his verdict on the Whites’ squad size, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “When Jesse Marsch first came in he said he wanted more squad rotation and he will give young players a chance.

“It’s ok having a first-team squad of 18 if that’s a very strong squad of 18, like Liverpool’s would be. Then you’ve got some really good youngsters coming through.

“Leeds don’t have the strength in depth in terms of quality. We’ver seen that when they lost a couple of players.

“You’ve got to add and make sure it’s better than what you’ve got already if you want to improve.”

Leeds did not add to their squad in the January window despite their perilous position in the league under Marcelo Bielsa.

Under Marsch, the Yorkshire giants have gone unbeaten in their last four Premier League games and have moved eight points clear of the relegation zone.
