Leeds United news: Joe Gelhardt could be out for ‘eight weeks’ after journalist update – pundit

Alan Hutton has raised fears Leeds United could be without Joe Gelhardt for “six to eight weeks” if he has suffered anything but a minor thigh injury.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the Whites have suffered a “nightmare” with fitness and injury problems.

Gelhardt, 19, limped off in the first half of Monday’s (4 April) under-23s clash against Crystal Palace, with Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross reporting he was pointing to the back of his left thigh.

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth tweeted that the teenager would undergo tests today (April 5), with the club’s initial prognosis a dead leg.

Leeds play Watford on Saturday in a crunch clash at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Hutton raised fears Gelhardt could miss a significant chunk of the rest of the season if his test results are not positive.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I just think in general, the injury situation at Leeds has been a nightmare.

“When you really think about it, every week we’re talking about somebody being out.

“Let’s just hope that it is a dead leg because if you’re talking a thigh injury, he could be out for six to eight weeks. Fingers crossed it’s not.

“Playing against teams like Watford and teams round about you, they are six-pointers. You need your full squad fit and raring to go.

“That’s whether it be starting XI or off the bench to make an impact, like Gelhardt has done this season. Hopefully, it’s not too serious.”

Gelhardt has played 16 times across all competitions for Leeds this season.

He has scored twice for the senior side, with a further three assists under his belt.
