Leeds United news: Phillips baffled by ‘bizarre’ transfer decision after journalist reveal

Kevin Phillips is baffled by Leeds United’s “bizarre” decision not to sign any senior players in the January transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner said new faces would have been “a big help” for Marcelo Bielsa’s side between now and the end of the season.

The Whites made no signings in the winter window despite injuries to key players in the first half of the campaign.

As revealed by Leeds Live‘s Joe Donnohue (3 February), Marcelo Bielsa has not been able to pick from a full side at any point this season.

In total, his squad have missed a combined 90 games this term, with five or more players missing in nine of their 21 Premier League games.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Leeds’ lack of signings, Phillips said: “It’s bizarre.

“Only Victor Orta and Marcelo Bielsa can answer why they didn’t get anyone in.

“You think they’d want to freshen it up, especially seeing as this season hasn’t gone to plan. They have had so many injuries.

“A new signing can give everyone a lift. It can inspire people. Bielsa has shown he can be very stubborn or maybe it is because they don’t have the finances. Who knows.

“I’m surprised they didn’t dip into the market though. A couple of new faces would have been a big help for the run-in.”
